About Underground Education

Underground Education is an Early Childhood Education consultancy that provides professional development and specializes in cultural transformation. We believe every early learner deserves a classroom where they feel they belong, are understood and are valued. Our approach to inclusive education is rooted in culturally responsive, research based- understanding of children’s needs. We address school culture, curriculum, classroom management, through the following philosophies:

Belonging. “Belonging means more than just being present; it means being a valued member of a community.” john a powell

Beloved Community. “If we want a beloved community, we must stand for justice, have recognition for difference without attaching difference to privilege." bell hooks

Bravery. “Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can't practice any other virtue consistently." Maya Angelou

What happens underground?

Roots grow. The root is the first part of the plant to emerge and plays a crucial role in the plant’s overall development; just as children critical elements of children’s social and emotional learning are developed in their first five years of life.

Interconnected systems develop. The mighty redwood tree stands the tallest in the world. Underground, their root systems help them survive by intertwining with the roots of other trees around them. Their interconnectedness provides stability to these giants during strong winds and floods - quite literally holding one another down. In this way, communities also withstand tough times by banding together.

Revolutions are born and sustained. Outlawing and restricting education is fundamental to oppression. In earlier times when education was illegal, our ancestors bravely resisted by reclaiming their stories and finding ways to teach in secret. It was true then, as it is now; education is the key to liberation.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
